Delivering Quality, Innovation and Knowledge to the BID industry

CIBM look back

The Certificate in BID Management (CIBM) is the industry’s only formal qualification. Take a look at how the qualification has helped previous graduates develop their careers and what their advice for the class of 2017 would be.

Maris Puks, Hatton Garden and Richmond BID

“I used to be Operations and Finance Manager at We Are Waterloo BID, since the BID course I have set up the Hatton Garden BID and am currently taking Richmond BID to the ballot.”

Advice?

“Choose a dissertation topic that is or might become relevant for your day-to-day job, in that way you can dedicate more time and effort to do it well.”

Cherry Shine, Wolverhampton BID

“Having worked in Economic Regeneration, BIDs were a concept I had heard about but knew little about how they worked. In taking the plunge by moving into the field of BIDs gaining considerable in-depth knowledge and understanding through the CIBM and managing the development phase, I am now BID Director a year and a half into our first and very exciting term.

Advice?

“Embrace the discussions about the intricacies of BID’s and enjoy widening your BID network”

Catherine Turness, Winchester BID

I progressed from BID Manager to Executive Director last year”

Catherine has recently been awarded the Women in Business Rising Star Award! Congratulations!

Advice?

Choose a subject for your coursework that you are passionate about – perhaps exploring a solution to a problem or a subject of interest to BIDs nationally.”

Lee Walker, Nottingham BID

I feel I am a more rounded BID practitioner as a result of the course.  Since the course I have gone on to become BID manager in a core city at 26, managing a budget of over £1,000,000 per annum.  It has also allowed me to develop within CMS into the R&D manager looking at development and renewal of BIDs across the country and have been able to lead workshops for British BIDs, giving back some of the knowledge that I have been fortunate to acquire.

Advice?

Ask questions and challenge each other. Some of the best learning points i gained were by challenging my classmates and talking through our positions on particular issues. I remember one very heated debate on what constitutes success for BIDs which teased out many issues for BID managers across the country.

Hasanul Hoque, Camden Town Unlimited

While doing the course I was the Office Manager but then quickly progressed to Project Manager and now Operations Director

Advice?

Don’t underestimate the work and time commitment but it is really worth it.

Ross Feeney, Successful Sutton

“The Certificate in BID Management is the only nationally recognised course for BID Professionals and has quickly become the ‘must have’ qualification for anyone serious about a career in BID management. The training, mentoring and support provided by British BIDs has been invaluable; I am proud of my achievement and recommend the qualification without hesitation.”

Alison Dewey, Southend BID

“I have been promoted to the role of BID Manager since graduating from the course and this was largely down to the value and trust that our Directors have in the qualification. The course covered a range of aspects, all of which were relevant to me and have me more confidence in my job. I would absolutely recommend the course.”

Ben Collins, Ilford BID

“I found the syllabus extremely insightful and it provided me with tools that I could immediately put to use in my day to day job. Since the course, my career has progressed and I am now BID Manager of Nottingham where we successfully renewed last year. Part of the course focused on renewal ballots and this helped me enormously.”
